Initial setup
It’s late November 1883 and with the report of General
William Hick’s total defeat on 5-November at the hands of Khalifa Abdallahi,
the new commander of the Army of the Mahdi, garrisons all across the Sudan are
on alert for the expected outbreak of revolt. General Gordon has even been
dispatched to Khartoum to organize the defense and possible withdrawal out of
the Sudan. In Suakin General Valentine Baker of the Gendarme arrives to assess
the eastern Sudan, home to the soon to be famous Fuzzy Wuzzy tribes under Osama
Digna. And in Egypt, Generals Wolseley,
Stewart and others are doing a survey of the Northern Sudan in preparation for
a British intervention should it be needed.
