Report from Cincycon 2014.
Well the 1866 Nachod game went very well. Not using the Mass
modifier against the Austrian attack columns like we did in the first play test
worked out very well. Since I had 8
gamers sign up for the game. And 3 of
them had either played this before or were part of the group, I gave 4 of the
new gamers the Austrians, and one guy the Prussian Advance Guard. Now here is where I have to admit that I did
not take many pictures or any in the first couple of turns. Trying to run a game was first and foremost,
pics second. I was also lucky that most had played Fire and Fury so they picked
up the changes very quickly.
The first turn both Austrian Brigades rolled 10’s so
Hertwicks Brigade did charge but came up just short. And Jonak’s brigade being in Road column just
had Double time movement. The Prussian fire was minimal and during their turn
started to adjust the lines.
Turn 2 saw Herwick’s Brigade advance into contact and
something that did not happen before was that Jonak’s brigade advanced to far
left of Wenzelberg. One of the Austrian
regiments charge was checked and this regiment was to suffer a slow and
painfully death at the hands of 2 Prussian batteries and 2/3’s of a Prussian
regiment as it never did recover. The
other regiment won its melee and pushed the Prussians off the top of the hill.
The Prussian player then rolled good enough to counter
attack this regiment and push it back down the slope. This went back and forth
for several turns until the die rolls forced Hertwick’s brigade to retire from
the field.
The remains of Hertwick’s Brigade
But they did their
job eliminating several Prussian units that when Rosenzweig’s brigade cam on it
advanced up the slope and continued the push.
In the mean time Jonak’s brigade pushed up the slope and
cleared Wysokow.
Jonak’s Brigade advancing up the slope:
They were then able to turn and attack the Prussian’s facing
Hertwick’s in the rear.
Unfortunately this regiment suffered the same die roll
issues as the other regiment in the fact that it sat there for several turns
while the Prussian poured fire into its flank until the Jaegers came over to
screen them.
To the north the Austrian Cuirassiers advanced to the north
and faced off against the Prussian cavalry in a back and forth battle for
several turns. Until the Prussians finally won that battle.
Austrain Reserve Artillery:
The Austrian Reserve Artillery showed up and formed a gun
line between Wysokow and the Waldchen forest with the last Brigade forming up
behind it as the rest of the Prussians filed through Alstadt and began forming
into a battle line. The Austrian tried to delay this with a charge form Jonck's
brigade, but they finally saw how devastating the Prussian infantry fire can be
and were pushed back.
At this point we called the game as the Prussian had formed
their line and the Austrians had almost cleared the plateau but were running
out of fresh troops to hold.
The last picture is from Nick’s Napoleonic game using his
rules on the same board. This works out
great since we did not have to tear one game completely down and setup a
different board. Will do this in the
future! In this on the Austrians cleared
the ridge and pushed the French back across the front. But then again I setup
the Austrian guns and cavalry on their left and then had to face them as the
French. So I guess I can claim that one
as a lose and a victory.
